# What answer engine optimization actually is

AEO is being cited inside AI answers, not just ranked below them. What Google says it requires, what the research found, and what our 75-search study shows.

In short

## What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization is the work of being cited inside the answers AI systems write, rather than only ranked in the list of links beneath them. Google states no special markup or files are required for it. The practical difficulty is that citation and ranking are decided separately, which is measurable.

Answer engine optimization is the work of getting cited inside the answer an AI system writes, rather than only ranked in the list of links underneath it.

That is the whole idea. The reason it needs an article is that almost everything written about it skips the part where you check whether the tactics work.

## Why it became a separate job

A traditional result gives you a position. Someone scans, chooses, clicks. An AI Overview, ChatGPT or Perplexity answer gives them the answer, with a few sources named beside it. Being named is a different outcome from being listed, and it is won or lost separately.

We can put a number on how separately. Across 75 US commercial searches we captured in September 2026, AI Overviews made 348 citations. **189 of them — 54% — named a domain that was not in the organic top ten of the same page.** On ten of those searches, not one cited source appeared in the results below.

The full method and the caveats are in [AI Overviews cite what Google does not rank](https://elivateseo.com/insights/ai-overviews-cite-what-google-does-not-rank).

## AEO and SEO, and where they actually differ

Most of the underlying work is shared, which is why treating them as two products is usually a way to sell two things.

| | SEO | AEO |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Target | a position in the list | a citation in the answer |
| Unit of success | the page ranks | a passage gets quoted |
| Measured by | position, clicks, impressions | whether you are named, and where |
| Shared groundwork | crawlable site, accurate structured data, one consistent description of who you are, content that survives being lifted out of its page | |

The split is narrower than the marketing suggests. SEO is depth, coverage, and the research that decides which pages are worth writing. AEO is extractability and measurement — whether a paragraph can be lifted out and still make sense, and whether anything is actually citing you. [We measured the overlap](https://elivateseo.com/insights/geo-vs-seo): on 65 AI Overviews, the page ranking first was cited 38% of the time, and the cited set and the top ten overlap by about a quarter.

## A worked example, on this exact search

*What is an example of AEO?* is one of the questions Google itself shows on this search. The search is its own answer.

On the capture behind this article, the AI Overview for `answer engine optimization` cited five domains:

| Cited in the AI Overview | Ranked in the organic top ten |
| --- | --- |
| youtube.com | no |
| tryprofound.com | no |
| marceldigital.com | no |
| neilpatel.com | no |
| hubspot.com | **yes — position 2** |

Four of the five were quoted by Google on a page they did not rank on. One site managed both. That is AEO and SEO diverging, on the search for the term itself.

## What Google says you need

This is the part usually left out, so here it is verbatim:

> There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.

And:

> You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features. There’s also no special schema.org structured data that you need to add.

Google’s stated bar is that a page is indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Nothing else.

Be careful with what that does and does not say. **“Not required” is not “does not help.”** Structured data does other jobs — it is how a search engine resolves who you are and connects your pages to one entity, and this site uses it heavily for exactly that. What Google is ruling out is a special AI-specific markup that buys entry. We later measured this directly across the same 75 searches: 82% of ranking pages already carry JSON-LD, and the sites AI Overviews cite without ranking are no more marked-up than the rest — the count is in [structured data for AI answers, measured](https://elivateseo.com/insights/structured-data-for-ai-answers).

## What the research found

The term comes from a peer-reviewed paper: *GEO: Generative Engine Optimization*, Aggarwal and colleagues, presented at KDD 2024. They built a 10,000-query benchmark and tested optimisation methods against generative engines.

What raised visibility, by up to 40%: **adding statistics, quoting sources, and citing references** — plus writing with authoritative rather than hedged phrasing. What did not: **keyword stuffing**, the oldest tactic in search, tested directly and found wanting.

The authors are explicit that results vary by domain, so this is a direction rather than a recipe.

## About the tools

Every advertiser on this search sells an AI-visibility tool. It is worth being plain about what they do.

They **measure**. They tell you whether ChatGPT or an AI Overview mentions your brand, and how that changes. That is genuinely useful reporting, and it is the thing nobody could see a year ago.

They do not **cause** citation. Google says no tool, file or markup is required to appear. A tool that reports your citation rate is a thermometer, not a treatment — and a thermometer is worth owning if you are actually going to act on the reading.

We are not going to rank them for you. We have not tested them, and recommending software we have not run is the sort of thing that makes an SEO firm’s advice worthless.

## What to do, honestly

Everything below is either Google’s stated requirement or a finding from the paper above. Nothing here is our invention.

1. **Be indexed and snippet-eligible.** Google’s actual bar. If a page is not in the index, no amount of AEO applies to it.
2. **Answer the question in the first paragraph**, in a way that survives being cut out of the page. A passage that needs the three paragraphs above it to make sense cannot be quoted.
3. **Put numbers in it, and cite where they came from.** The two things the research found moved visibility most.
4. **Say who you are, consistently, everywhere.** Not an AI trick — it is how any engine resolves one company from three profiles that disagree.
5. **Measure whether you are cited.** Otherwise none of the above is falsifiable, and it stops being work and starts being belief.

## What nobody can tell you yet

Why a given source gets cited. We measured that citation and ranking diverge on 54% of citations; we did not measure what causes either, and no honest reading of the current public evidence gets you a mechanism.

Anyone selling certainty about how to get into an AI answer is ahead of what is known. The measurable part is real and worth doing. The rest is being figured out in public, and we would rather say so than fill the gap with confidence.

This is what [our AEO work](https://elivateseo.com/services/aeo) is: answers written to stand on their own, on pages that are eligible to be shown, plus measurement of whether anything is quoting you. Being named as a brand is [GEO](https://elivateseo.com/services/geo), and the [free audit](https://elivateseo.com/audit) checks the technical basics behind both in about a minute.

## Questions

**How do you do answer engine optimization?**

Answer engine optimization starts with being indexed and eligible for a snippet, which Google states is the only technical requirement. Beyond that, the peer-reviewed work on the subject found that adding statistics, quoting sources and citing references raised visibility in generative engines, while keyword stuffing did not.

**What is the difference between AEO and SEO?**

SEO aims at a position in the list of links; AEO aims at being quoted in the answer above it. The two come apart more than most people expect — across 75 captured searches, 54% of AI Overview citations named a domain that was not in the organic top ten of the same page.

**What is the best answer engine optimization tool?**

No tool is required, and Elivate SEO does not recommend one it has not tested. Google states that appearing in AI features needs no special files, markup or schema. AEO tools measure whether a brand is being cited, which is useful reporting, but measuring citation is not the same as causing it.

**What is an example of answer engine optimization?**

The search for "answer engine optimization" is itself an example. On the capture behind this article, its AI Overview cited five domains and four of them did not appear in the organic results underneath — so four sites were quoted by Google on that page without ranking on it.
