AEO · answer engine optimization

Answer Engine Optimization

Before anyone clicks, the results page answers the question itself: in People Also Ask, in the AI Overview, in the snippet above the links. AEO decides whether the passage it uses is yours.

01 — the difference

Some passages get lifted. Most don't.

An answer engine quotes a passage, not a page. A passage it can quote has to make sense with nothing around it, which most writing on the web was never asked to do.

What separates a passage an answer engine can lift from one it cannot.
Stays on the pageGets lifted
Opens with "As mentioned above"Answers in its first sentence
Gets to the answer in paragraph fourNames its subject instead of "it"
Needs the table above to make senseCarries its number and where it came from
Hedges every claimMakes sense with nothing around it

The peer-reviewed study that named the field found that adding statistics, quoting sources and citing references raised visibility in generative engines, and keyword stuffing did not. What AEO actually is →

02 — scope

What this includes

Question research

The questions your buyers actually ask, taken from real results pages — People Also Ask, the questions an AI Overview follows up with — and from what your own customers write and call about.

Answer-first rewrites

The pages you already have, reworked so each answers its question in the first paragraph, in plain words, before the detail. Starting rarely needs new pages.

Passages that stand alone

Every answer written to survive being lifted out of its page: it names its subject, carries its number and its source, and never leans on the paragraph above it.

Structure and eligibility

Headings phrased as the question, lists and tables where the answer is one, and nothing that stops a page being shown as a snippet — starting with the page being indexed at all.

Measurement

A fixed set of your questions, checked on a schedule, so you can see which show your passage and which show someone else's.

03 — an honest note

There is no markup trick for this

Google states that appearing in AI Overviews needs no special files, markup or schema. Its bar is a page that is indexed and eligible to be shown as a snippet. And the old shortcut is gone: Google stopped showing FAQ rich results for every site on 7 May 2026.

So we don't sell tricks. We write answers people and assistants can use, we fix whatever stops a page being eligible, and we measure whether your passage is the one that gets used.

If an agency promises you the snippet or the AI Overview, ask how they would know. Nobody outside Google controls which passage is chosen.

three jobs · one team

AEO wins the passage. GEO wins the brand.

Being quoted is half of being found in AI answers. The other half is the assistant knowing who you are — and none of it works on a site crawlers cannot read, which is SEO.
